J. Rieger & Co. Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is a milestone for Kansas City whiskey: the first rye distilled, aged and bottled entirely at J. Rieger & Co. since the company was resurrected in 2014. The original Rieger's was one of the largest mail-order whiskey houses in America before Prohibition shut it down in 1919, and the revived distillery in the East Bottoms has been rebuilding that legacy with its own distillate ever since. This rye is aged six years and bottled in bond at 100 proof, meaning it comes from a single distilling season at a single distillery and spent at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse. WhiskyCast scored it 93 points, describing baking spice, toasted oak, caramel, vanilla, honey, baking chocolate, dried fruit and maple on the nose, a thick, spicy palate of clove, cinnamon and black pepper moving into cocoa and honey, and a long, warm finish. Rieger's own notes add stone fruit and toasted vanilla. It is a landmark bottle for the Midwest craft scene.Buy J. Rieger & Co.
