Buckner's is named for Captain Philip Buckner, a Revolutionary War veteran of the Virginia Militia awarded 7,000 acres along the Ohio River — land he donated to found the town of Augusta, Kentucky, along with its first school, courthouse, and jail. Augusta Distillery launched in 2018 to honor that legacy, starting as a bottler before breaking ground on a $23 million distillery on the limestone banks of the Ohio in Bracken County, once the heart of bourbon's production zone. This 13 Year was its inaugural release, and it arrived with a bang: named the world's best bourbon at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, one month after the 15 Year took Best Craft Bourbon from the American Distilling Institute. The whiskey was distilled in Bardstown at Barton 1792 from the classic high-rye mash bill of 74% corn, 18% rye, and 8% malted barley, aged 13 years in new charred oak, and bottled unfiltered at full cask strength — hazmat territory, with single barrels ranging from the mid-130s to over 140 proof. Expect maple, caramel, vanilla, crisp apple, and antique oak on the nose, opening into burnt brown sugar, barrel-aged honey, orange zest, cream, and peppery baking spice, finishing long on cinnamon, cardamom, cedar, and tea leaves. Drinkhacker rated it an A and found it surprisingly balanced for the strength — Bourbon Obsessed called it a great ball of fire, in a good way. Keep water handy.
