Barrel Reserve is Arran's entry point into the house style, introduced with the distillery's 2020 rebrand as a replacement for the old Lochranza Reserve. It's matured entirely in first-fill ex-bourbon American oak — no sherry, no wine finish — vatted from casks generally around seven to eight years old alongside some older stock, bottled at 43% ABV with natural color. That bourbon-only approach is deliberate: it's the clearest look at Arran's unpeated Lochranza spirit without cask influence doing the heavy lifting. Expect a light straw pour with vanilla, poached pear, sweet lemon, biscuit, white chocolate, cut flowers, and a delicate hint of salty sea air on the nose, opening into creamy vanilla custard that turns citrusy — lemon and grapefruit — with grassy cereal notes, green apple, cinnamon, and white pepper, finishing medium on apple peel, citrus zest, and oak shavings. Drinkhacker scored it B+, praising the cereal-forward, honey-laced character. Reviewers generally agree it's a solid, well-priced everyday malt rather than a showstopper — a genuinely good introduction to Arran before stepping up to the 10 Year, cask finishes, or The Bothy.
