The distillery John Shenk founded in Pennsylvania in 1753 changed hands in the 1800s and became Bomberger's, then Michter's in the 20th century, before closing in the 1980s; the resurrected Michter's in Shively, Kentucky now releases an annual Bomberger's Declaration in its Legacy Series, and the 2025 edition is built on wood science. The hallmark is Chinquapin oak — Quercus muehlenbergii, a rare cousin of white oak — and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson used barrels made from staves air-dried outdoors for 18 months, three years, four years, and five years, against an industry standard of about six months; the extended seasoning breaks down harsh tannins and changes what the oak gives.
