Akkeshi Shoman Nature Thrives Blended Japanese Whisky is the eleventh release in the 24 Sekki series from Akkeshi Distillery in eastern Hokkaido, each bottling named for one of the 24 micro-seasons of the traditional Japanese calendar. Shoman is late spring, when nature bursts into bloom. This malt and grain blend uses whisky matured in Hokkaido mizunara oak as its cornerstone, married with spirit aged in ex-bourbon, sherry, red wine and rum casks, and is bottled non-chill filtered at 48% ABV.It opens with golden apple, muscat grape and tropical fruit layered over charred wood, maple bacon and white pepper, a refined and dynamic balance of sweet and savory with the incense-like signature of mizunara. The finish is long and gently smoky. Serve it neat or with a drop of water.Akkeshi's seasonal releases sell through quickly, and this 700ml bottle is a beautifully composed blend from one of Japan's most exciting young distilleries.
